the most amazing women to feature in this issue. Meeting them and listening to their advice

and stories was one of the best things I have done since starting my company. I cannot wait for all of you

to hear the advice they shared with my team and me. What does it mean to be featured in our Chic Metropol-

itan “Power of Women” issue? � is is the question that was addressed by my editors, who wanted to assemble the creme de la

explains, “We got to thinking about how to make our perfume visible and beautiful. It really is in our DNA, because everything we make has to have the capacity to last a lifetime, and jewelry is something you pass down.” Solving the

problem of scented jewelry was not easy, and making metal and stone exude the right scent at the right time took inspiration and science. Their solution involves microencapsulating a scent onto the jewelry’s silk chord, or by spraying a caged piece of po-

rous ceramic. Both of these methods allow for ‘recharging’ at home to keep the scent powerful yet seductive, and of course enable discerning buyers to choose one of five scents that best suits their desire.

THE HEIR, APPARENTHeir to a line of luxury pioneers, the Henessy line of cognac-makers, Kilian decided to be independent from family tradition, creating his own luxury brand, with the ambition of reflecting his distinct personality and aspiration to create a feeling of uncompromising luxury combined with true elegance.

Kilian has spent time with the most prestigious perfume houses, world-class luxury brands such as Christian Dior, Paco Rabanne, Alexandre Mc-Queen and Giorgio Armani. After these successful experiences, he created his own unique approach to scent, business and design. Today, the world of Kilian includes a total of twenty seven scents, spanning five different fra-grance collections; “L’Ouevre Noire”, “Arabian Night”, “Asian Tales”, “In the Garden of Good and Evil” and “Addictive State of Mind”.

We sat with Kilian to explore his world, and his passion for multi-sensory luxury experiences.

Tell us how where you grew up and what inspired you to do this business?“I grew up in France, surrounded by the Cognac business of our family, Hennessy. Luxury and the luxury business have been a part of my life since birth, and towards the end of university I was drawn to the fragrance busi-ness – I often say it just ‘clicked’ for me. Years of working with fabulously talented people at Dior, Caraban, Gucci and others taught me the difference that true creativity can make. My time as marketing director at L’Oreal also gave me amazing exposure to how we can work with consumers to co-create magical experiences.

After all of this, I decided to prove to the world that I could create some-thing special on my own, independent of the Hennessy legacy I so cherish. It is from this that our fragrance lines were born.

When did you launch the scented jewelry collection? What was your inspiration? Where can our readers purchase it?Our philosophy is a ‘return to real luxury.’ Real luxury is not dispensable, is not created in factories then thrown away when finished. Real luxury lasts, it means quality as much as creativity. It means built to be part of your life, your family, forever.

Real luxury also meant surprise and a new take on life. Experiences that are new and delightful. So we decided to put a face to perfume, to make what is invisible, visible. After all, we live in a world that is image driven, and we asked ourselves, how do you create a scent that matters in this visual world. Our answer is a system that blends sight and scent.

In our jewelry, there is an elegant ‘cage’ system, where a piece of specially created ceramic absorbs the scent, releasing it at the right time and right amount. Our customer can recharge this weekly at their discretion, to main-tain their desired effect.

We were proud to launch at Saks this week.

Why did you launch your Kilian Home Collection? We were so excited at the possibilities of this blend of sight and scent that we couldn’t help ourselves and created a line for the home. Beautiful, luxurious materials are possible for home decoration that are not for jewelry, so we explored these new mediums.

Your newest perfume is “Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi”. Could you tell us more about it?Our fifth scent collection is reminiscent of the garden of good and evil,

seductively reminding admirers of original sin. We playfully named this scent after a commonly used phrase to hint at pleasures to come.

This scent has a complexity that reveals itself like the unfolding of a story, the pages of a book. The fragrance contains a gorgeous blend of gardenia from Brazil, sandal-wood from Sri Lanka, and other mysteries.

Is there a perfume in your collection that reminds you of Miami?For me Miami is very sexy, hot, exotic, and sultry: just like our “Voulez Vous Cou-chez Avec Moi.”

You recently opened boutique in Lugano. How many boutiques are you in right now? We are finding our customers want us in many locations, so we’re lucky to be expand-ing rapidly. We’ll have our second location on Madison Ave in New York next year, another is being discussed for Dallas and more in Miami and Los Angeles.

We are doing Women of Power Issue. Which one of your scents represent power?All my fragrances express power, and the jewelry that goes with them brings that

expression a visual facet. We’ve brought elements like engraved shield motifs, strong angles and deep onyx to create a sense of owning who you are and not being afraid of a little seduction.

What is your favorite perfume in your collection?For myself, I love “Intoxicated.” I find the blend of Turkish coffee, with wood scents to be…intoxicating! I’m proud to say, it has just won awards best perfume and best marketing.

For women, I love all of our fragrances, but have a special place in my heart for “Good Girl Gone Bad.”

What is your favorite city besides Paris?New York

What was your inspiration for “Straight to Heaven”?This is a unique perfume – a very simple formula that relies on very strong concen-trations of powerful scents. We’ve used patchouli and souveil wood as statements that cannot be ignored.

MS. STORMY SIMON’S PATH FROM ENTRY LEVEL assistant to President of Overstock.com is one composed of many elements, both in terms of business acumen and per-sonal ethos. It is a path that demonstrates the importance

of family, determination, and an unwavering passion for learning. I had the pleasure of interviewing Stormy and gaining some additional insights into her current position, as well as the challenges and achievements along the way.

Can you provide us a snapshot of your background and what sparked your interest in business?I think I’ve always had an interest in marketing; it was just innate. When I was 11 years old I had this notebook; I’d watch a commercial and then rewrite it to reflect what I thought the advertisers should be doing to make the ad more effective. I went to college for a short time, but I always tended to find jobs that I worked just to stay engaged.

I took a summer job and within one week, I was promoted to assistant to the president. I began seeing the insights of profit and loss statements, using Salesforce, and meeting with the CFO; that one year of college that I had began to come together in this really rapid-fire way and prevented me from ever going back to school. I’m not saying that college is not good or the right thing to do, but for me that’s what kind of made me think, “Oh, I’m in, like I am in…I get this and I can do it.”

From there, I had a variety of jobs; I was the producer of the number one country radio morning show here in Salt Lake City, which was fun, and I also did event planning for groups of up to 15,000 people; that particular role gave me the skills that I still apply today. I had these great experiences in different in-dustries that were diverse enough that I felt I was getting my college education all along the way, and I became passionate about each individual industry. It was all on-the-spot learning; I kind of walked into it and being that I was a single mom, working was always something I had to do.

Who were your early influences or people from whom you drew inspiration?Definitely my mom; she always told me, “You are your word. It doesn’t matter if you’re working in a convenience store, are a landscaper, or whatever it is that you do, you should be of your word, and don’t become your job.” She was a su-per-strong woman who made me very tough. I’d get in the most trouble for lying. It was alright not to know, but you couldn’t lie. When I look back, she was that force that made me realize I could be very intense - my mother was extremely intense - but I saw it as a good thing.

What lead to your initial interest in working at Overstock.com and what were some seminal moments on your journey toward your current position as Pres-ident?I moved back to Utah after September 11th and heard about this dot-com. The only way in the door was through a temp agency. I walked in, met with the CEO, and got the job. At that point, I thought of going back to school to find out what career I would be most suited for; I thought of business, psychology, or related fields. About 3 months in, this light switched on in my mind and I realized that

this new e-commerce thing was really going to be revolutionary and change human behavior.

In terms of psychology, e-commerce was changing my behavior as well; I was going online to Overstock.com and it occurred to me that women everywhere were probably doing the same thing; it was the fun new way to browse and shop. About 3 months later, I had the idea of the “Discover the Secret of ‘The Big O’” campaign. After I pitched the campaign to our Founder and CEO, Patrick Byrne, I was given a small budget to put it together.

I was successful in its implementation, and it really helped Overstock as a retail-er, both in e-commerce, and in the mind of the consumer. Another pivotal moment was when we had some warehouse problems during the 2004 holiday season. We’d had some management turnover, and Patrick called me on Thanksgiving. He told me that he needed me to run the warehouse the next day, which was Black Friday.

I basically walked into the warehouse and ran it for a few months and it turned out that I did a pretty good job. This industry wasn’t really defined yet, and I had the opportunity to raise my hand and have the relationship with our Founder and CEO to say, “Hey, have you thought about this? Maybe we should do this.” So we really pioneered many ways to ship furniture online, and we were the first to do so. eBay had a consumer-to-consumer business model and Amazon was the largest book retailer; we were shipping couches and rugs. Overstock was a really unique place to be.

What challenges have you encountered as a woman in the workplace, and how do you believe perceptions have changed in terms of attitudes towards female busi-ness leaders?It’s interesting. The world has changed so much. When I was younger, there would always be challenges. I didn’t just walk into any job; I always knew that when I took a job, I would get promoted, work really hard, and be able to prove myself once I got in the door. In some of the positions I had along the way, you had male supervisors, and they would treat you like a girl; their expectations and the way regarded you would have a lot to do with your gender. Now the world is different and that is no longer the case.

However, I do think there is a big difference in male vs. female in business, and for me it was about being true to myself, which is what my mom always told me to do; I have a lot of passion, I am outspoken, tenacious, I am woman, and I am unapologetic for it. So can you be a woman and not be a bitch? I guess that’s in the eyes of the beholder, but when you’re in a very male-dominated state like Utah for many years, you can speak to that. I think the path has changed a lot in the past 10-15 years. I live here so I can say it. If I lived outside of the state, I might take offense to it.

I believe that perceptions have also progressed a great deal. Unfortunately, what I think has also changed in some instances is that a woman will try to be more like a man in the workplace, and I just never want to be that person. I always want to

be me. I remember being a little girl and seeing women burning their bras on TV around 1975. I asked my mom, “What is this? What is happening?” She told me that there were a lot of good things going on, but then she also said, “They’re burn-ing their bras; you need a bra. You’re a woman, right?”

Her point was to never let go of your femininity. My mom used that moment to reinforce our discussion, and I will remember that forever. I want equality, of course; equal rights, equal pay, and equal opportunity as a woman, but without adopting the traits of a man. I hope I’ve never been promoted or received an opportunity because I was a woman, but because of my hard work.

What is your personal philosophy in regard to effective management?I think it depends upon on who you’re talking to. I play by affiliation. I love team sports; I love watching them and I love the coaches. I can be a hard coach, but I trust the team. It’s interesting at Overstock because I started at an entry level position, and I subsequently have been honored enough to not only develop an industry, but do it while rising through the ranks

I think the philosophy is just now emerging that you can’t take things person-ally, which I do sometimes. We have to make the right decisions for the business and have a team that talks; you have to be able to trust your team and getting to that point takes tough decisions. If I said that everybody could be led equally, that would be a lie. Some love you and some hate you. But regardless, your word has to be right, you have to stay true, and you’ve got to believe in the mission.

What role does social media play in establishing a deeper connection between you and your customers?For Overstock and its customers I absolutely love it! Customer service is my baby; I love that department and I believe it’s the backbone of the company. It’s a transparent way for customers to have their voices heard through those chan-nels. The bad part of social media is that some people sit behind their computer screen and are extremely mean, not just with businesses or business leaders but also with consumers, people, humans, society; you see some people going online and saying the most horrific things that they would never say if they weren’t anonymous. I sometimes wish that people would feel like it was just best to be kind most of the time.

What do you feel are the most important characteristics for a leader to possess?Authenticity and belief are very important to me. You’ve got to be able to rally the troops, and be a cheerleader. Those are very important qualities to have as a leader.

Being that tech and e-commerce is constantly evolving with new innova-tions and strategies, how do you keep apprised of key developments in a 24-hour news cycle?As much as I can; everyday you go through and look at the tech section and run the company, because we’re a platform, an e-commerce company. For me, having people with their thumb on the pulse of different arenas close by is the only way to stay apprised of key developments.

It’s also a matter of those people knowing which developments are key vs. those that are just interesting. So when you hear of a new social interaction that’s gaining ‘likes’ or trending up on Facebook or Twitter, those are the ones that get brought up and we think, “We should be aware of this. Let’s look at this and figure out what to do next.” It’s constantly evolving and keeps you on your toes.

I recently read about your win in the ‘Innovator’ category of the 2015 Women Tech Awards presented by The Women Tech Council; what role do you believe an innovative spirit has in terms of personal success?I was so excited! I was legitimately surprised and danced up to the stage; I was a happy camper. We’ve never had a technical generation like this one. You see an 11-month-old baby swiping on an iPhone and looking at pictures; it’s crazy! You have to be innovative, because we’ve never traveled this path before. If you sit back and watch, that’s an ok seat and you can still participate from there. But if you begin brainstorming, you can knock down the weeds and create a new path.

All of us are trailblazers, because consumers are deciding where they’re going to spend their money online, and retailers have to answer to that in their own way. Everybody’s innovating and it’s happening everywhere.

What is your vision for the future of Overstock.com?We recently purchased a company called SpeedRoute and developed a technology with a blockchain that can act as a security exchange in the crypto securities world. It’s called tØ (tee-zero); the trade is the settlement and it’s really a platform that allows small to midsize traders to compete with the biggies. There’s a real stock exchange, and it’s a great answer to avoiding the wait that comes with the standard T+3.

If you step off and look at what we have, it’s a platform and a connective tissue, as well as a logistic solution; we operate on behalf of our partners as well as our-selves. We’ve got a huge opportunity to go global; we have a warehouse in China that we opened in May, and we’re starting to sell our own products there for select marketplaces. Getting within a swipe of our consumer is everyone’s initiative with the mobile platforms and apps.

It’s all about being where the consumer is at the time they want to be there, and explaining the brand in whatever form they want to interact with it. It’s still the Wild West and I think there is much more to be discovered and uncovered; we just want to be at the forefront of it.

MM What advice can you give young women to follow the steps of of a power of women?LV “Follow your dreams and never question yourself. Hard work and deter-mination will give you the strength to achieve your goals.” If starring in two hit reality shows wasn’t enough, Vanderpump also is the owner of three top Los Angeles restaurants, including Villa Blanca, PUMP and SUR which is featured on Lisa’s other Bravo series, Vanderpump Rules. While balancing her professional life, Lisa always make family a priority as she has been married to long time love Ken Todd for more than thirty years.

She is also the proud mother to Pandora and Max and who can leave out her beloved animals which include the famous Giggy. Vanderpump has had her hands full, but has a loving family that is always there to support her next venture or cause.

Outside of her daily grind of taping multiple shows and running three successful restaurants, you’ll find Vanderpump giving back by supporting sev-eral charities and using her celebrity to bring awareness to many causes near and dear to her, like Family Equality. What is your secret to success?Th e secret to my success is staying true to my conviction. Not looking for a no but the yes! Hiring a good team is essential and knowing I can’t do it all.

How do balance running a business and personal life?Balancing my personal life and business has been an on going work in progress. I do believe having dinner at the end of the day with no phones or interruptions is key. I try to leave the business at the offi ce and know when I get home I need to be present. Especially with my kids.

What advice would you give other young women consider-ing getting into fashion?My advice to young designers is to absorb as much as you can. Knowing all aspects form production, costing, tech packs, fab-ric sourcing and essentially all ins and outs of running a busi-ness. All the knowledge you have can only make you a better designer.. It will set you apart from the other designers.

What’s is your favorite thing about your business? My favorite part of being a designer is creation of an idea and turning it into something that make woman feel fantastic.

How would you describe your personal style?My personal style I always said is “disheveled sexy”

What is your secret to becoming one of the top Real Estate agents in LA against some of the top agents in the World?Success in this fast-pace marketplace requires hard work, passion, dedication, great service, being authentic and trustworthy, and of course mastering every detail of the business. Th ose are givens. You also need to be listening constantly – to the client, to the ‘buzz’ and to your in-stincts – thinking one step ahead of your competition and competitors. But being successful is not just about taking what comes your way and being really good at managing the daily actions of real estate and a team- I think it has even more to do with what goes on inside you: under-standing what you really want and how you can manifest it through the power of positive thought. I also attribute much of my success today to my business partner Joyce Rey, amazing friends, clients and colleagues who believed in me.

How do you balance running a business and personal life? Work is what I do but it doesn’t defi ne my entire existence; having a balanced life is very important to me. Yes I work really hard, but I make sure to pencil out time for personal growth, for my family and friends, nature, travel, giving back, my yoga and health and fi tness. You have to be de-termined and proactive about setting aside time; if you wait for there to be time for your personal life, it will never happen. I know I wouldn’t be as successful in my career if these important parts of my life were missing.

What advice would you give other young women con-sidering starting a Real Estate agent career? Real estate is a great career choice: you are your own boss, you can earn a salary that matches your eff orts, you use your social skills and connections, and you meet inter-esting people and see beautiful architecture. Every day is diff erent, which for me is super important – it keeps me engaged and alive. You can take real estate to any level you want. I would highly recommend starting as an assistant or apprentice to learn from the best in the industry.

What is your Power of Women outfi t for big meetings?Unlike this photo, I’m not a dress girl at all. My style leans more toward leather pants and blouses with a designer handbag and shoes. Outside of work, I’m the complete opposite: bohemian and casual.

What current listings are you working on right now? I’m currently very excited to be representing one of the most expensive homes in the U.S.: “Palazzo di Amore,” which was listed for $149 million. It is truly a one-of-a-kind estate situated on a rare 25-acre parcel in Beverly Hills. It has received a lot of international media attention and my goal for 2016 is to fi nd that buyer for this excep-tional property.

What is your secret to success? I am stubborn and selfi sh. Th ose are horrible things to for a Persian woman to be. But I took time for myself and my profession, be-cause I believe that I am making a diff erence and that my work is important. I also get things done. I don’t just talk about it. I do it. Every time.

How do balance running a business and personal life?I learned in high school to focus 100% on what I am doing at the moment. If I am in surgery, I am mentally there and nowhere else. If I am with my husband and kids, it is the same (for the most part). Th at is how I make things work. I have also learned that you can have it all, but not at the same time. I can be doing really well at work and my kids’ grades will be dropping. So I just have to take an afternoon off of clinic to make sure that I stay on top of my kids’ education. You have to be fl exible as those needs are changing all the time.

What advice would you give other young women considering becoming a plastic surgeon?I love my job. It gives me purpose and joy. If you want it. Go get it.

What’s is your favorite thing about your business? Being a plastic surgeon means that I can be a scientist and an artist at the same time. I can also be a business-women and experiment with advertising and social media. Every-thing about it is me.

How would you describe your personal style? I used to think scrubs were sexy. Maybe I still do, a little. I am a big Sarah Pacini and Inter-mix fan. I love a little Euro and a little edgi-ness in my style. In life, I teach my daughters to show class and beauty in everything they do... how they dress, school projects, rela-tionships, etc. Th ere’s nothing more attractive than dignity and class.

What is your secret to success?Transparency is key to curating long term relationships in business. I work with some of the most exclusive luxu-ry brands and I have found that saving time on small talk is key. Th e soon-er you can establish deliverables, the sooner you can curate a return on in-vestment for yourself and your clients. But at the end of the day it’s hard work that brings success.

How do balance running a business and personal life? Very carefully. Being the blessed moth-er of two sons Hunter 9 and Hudson 7, I have to balance wearing multiple hats in my personal and professional life. Be it jetting off to New York for an event, or taking my sons to baseball and tennis, there has to be organization and balance.

What advice would you give other young women considering becoming a luxury brand connector? Get out there! Great a strong business plan that give you a strong base so that you’re not jumping around. You really have to know your market and focus on it, then you’ll be able to allocate your time in the right avenues to market yourself for success.

What’s is your favorite thing about your business? Th e experience. Every client brings a unique story and passion. What is your secret to success? It is my firm belief that true success is the result of the passion and inspiration that is derived from engaging in a profession that you love. For every person whom I guide to love a derive a deep personal satisfaction. How do you balance running a business and your personal life? As an entrepreneur and a mother I understand things can feel a bit overwhelming. However, I could not imagine my life any other way. I feel that as an entrepreneur and businesswoman I am an example for my child that it is possible to be both a dedicated parent and an accomplished professional. I have instilled in my son the values of commitment to a profession with an unwavering commitment to family.

What other advice would you give other young women starting a business? This may sound cliché, but I strongly believe in following your heart. If you pursue what truly ignites your passion then you can accomplish anything. One of the major benefits of running your own business is that it allows you the flexibility to create your own hours, which facilitates great availability for family commitments. What is your favorite thing about your business?I simply enjoy helping people find love at the highest level possible. I myself have been blessed. Many people hold erroneous beliefs at an unconscious level they are unworthy or undeserving of love. As a licensed Ph.D. psychologist, I have a reper-toire of clinical skills that reveal the obstacles that prevent my clients from achieving the healthy relationships they deserve. Helping people overcome negative beliefs about themselves and assisting them in developing their capacity for insight is simply transformative for my clients. Witnessing the happy couples I have matched and the marriages that have materialized from those matches could not be more rewarding. I am truly blessed to provide this service.

What is your philosophy behind Carat, Cut, Color, Clarity for the perfect engagement ring?Cut is the most important of the C’s! Cut harnesses all the available light from any environment and redirects it through the table of the stone and into the human eye. � is is the sparkle, the � re, the passion of the stone. I hold XX cutting patents. All reinventions of tra-ditional diamond cutting rules. I broke the rules to maximize the brilliance and o� er her something unique, Crisscut!

What di� erentiates CRISSCUT from other diamonds?Uniqueness. Crisscut challenges tradi-tional cutting techniques and param-eters. I pushed myself to improve, to reinvent, to o� er something more than generic diamonds. After all, she is the one your heart chose, she is the one, doesn’t she deserve a stone as unique as she is?

How and when did you develop the CRISSCUT diamond?Crisscut was a happy accident. I was faceting a diamond and slipped at the cutting wheel. What I saw intrigued me, it was interesting and di� erent. I decided to continue the pattern the same way and Crisscut was born! Years of trial and error followed until I perfected the angles to maximize the brilliance of the stone. I was awarded a patent for my labor of love in 1997.

What is the value proposition that CD o� ers to its customers?A truly unique designer diamond line. I am one of the few designers in the world that o� er my branded Criss-cut diamonds in multiple shapes. We manufacture exclusively in the US and I personally inspect and approve each ring before it leaves our studio.

What is your secret to success?My secret to success really has been being able to do a lot of diff erent specialties within my industry of television news, a kind of “Jane of all trades.” I anchor the 11am and the 5:30 pm newscasts at NBC6. I am also an Investigative Reporter, and currently handle the daily breaking news, and I am a Meteorologist. I’ve also worked as a Medical and Business Reporter. You garner a lot of knowledge and opportunity when you can handle a variety of situations whether it be a plane crash, or hurricane coverage, or putting scammers out of business who are victimizing South Floridians.

How do you balance running a business and personal life? I work for WTVJ/NBC6 News, which is owned by NBC-Universal, which is a multi-billion dollar conglomerate; however, as a news personality, you manage your own image and your own career. News is a 24/7, 365 day year business. So, it’s all consuming while you are on the clock. Miami is a news mecca and there are few big stories that occur across the globe that don’t have some kind of South Florida connection. So, with such a busy and demanding schedule, I’ve learned to be selective in what I do outside of work and the charities and events that I lend my name to. It’s just physically impossible to take on every event—even if I often want to do more.

What advice would you give other young women considering starting a business?My advice: live your dream, nurture your dream, fulfi ll your dream. No one is going to care about your career and your development more than you. So, invest in you. What’s is your favorite thing about your business? Th ere are two things I love about the TV News Business. I’ve interviewed everyone from Presidents to mega-super stars. In addition, no day is the same in the TV business. Every day is new and exciting and presents a whole host of new challenges.

How would you describe your personal style? My personal style is varied. I have a very professional yet polished and sophisticated look for the offi ce and on-air, however, after hours I like to be a bit more daring when it comes to fashion. Although, with both looks I would say my signature is vibrant colors and clean, yet interesting, lines. What makes a woman powerful? I think self-introspection makes a woman powerful. A woman who knows who she is and what she wants and is willing to work to achieve her goals makes a woman not only powerful but confi dent.

How do you balance running a business and person-al life?Balancing a business, friends and a family certainly be-comes very challenging at times. As I travel quite fre-quently and work with people in many diff erent time zones, time management is critical. I try to carve out time for myself each day by waking up early in the morning to work out, read, and organize my tasks. Technology is a great help while traveling to assist my kids with their homework through Facetime, to talk with teachers and coordinate with my staff . I’ve learned that in the end what’s most important is devoting all of my extra time to what matters most which is my family. What advice would you give other young women considering starting a business?If you have passion for what you do, it won’t feel like work and the money will follow. You need to be pre-pared to give your all and never forget that running your own business is 24/7. Surrounding yourself with a close inner circle of trusted team members is also a major key to success.

What is your favorite thing about your business? When I was a little girl I had a dream that I would talk to people all over the world, and that has truly become a reality. I always had a vision of working globally, hence the name “OneWorld Properties.” When I was younger I would pretend that I was on the line with a client from France while I had someone calling me from Russia on the other line, and my dream has defi nitely come true.

Today, I go to sleep responding to emails from China and I wake up to emails from Brazil. Being able to travel and expand into new markets is what I love most about my business, and it gives me a competitive edge to learn global strategies that I can apply locally. How would you describe your personal style? My personal style is a modern take on Audrey Hep-burn. I love classic elegance even when dressed in jeans, although I don’t mind spending the weekend in yoga pants when I’m with my kids. What makes a woman powerful? To me what makes a woman powerful is the ability to balance it all. When you love your business, what you do, and know what you’re talking about - that’s power-ful. Also, a great pair of shoes with a great purse always helps!

I think if you put all those things together you can enjoy what you do and when you enjoy what you do and find it interesting, it keeps you motivated and eager to learn. Knowledge is power. How do you balance running a business and personal life?It’s not so easy to balance your personal life and your busi-ness because mine are intertwined. I actually find each one more fun with the other in it. It is important to set aside time for yourself. For me, running is a big part of my daily routine and it helps me start my day right. What advice would you give other young women con-sidering starting a business?I think you have to set realistic goals and in the beginning you just have to work as hard as you can and then success will come. If you start humbly and keep doing the best you can, eventually that business will breathe success. What’s is your favorite thing about your business? I don’t have one favorite thing I have a lot of favorite things. I love the people that I meet, the deals that we negotiate, my team, my partner, my family and my company, they are all interesting parts, they are all connected. How would you describe your personal style? I think I try to be current in style. I would like to say I lean towards the conservative professional look and I al-ways care about how I am presenting myself and the same goes for my team. How do you balance running a business and personal life?I’m not sure I really do. I don’t know how to disconnect. I do take time for exercise and try to take time for travel including a passion of mine, which is scuba diving. I like to swim with sharks. Compared to men, women are naturally risk-averse, and I think that the women that make it in business, and life in general, have a higher risk-tolerance. What is your secret to success?Early on, my parents encouraged me to always give my best eff ort, and to take pride and excel in whatever I did. Our success in our offi ce is a product of that commit-ment: a result of years of training and the use of the latest techniques and state-of-the-art equipment. What makes a million dollar smile?Since a smile makeover is, for the most part, an elective treatment, careful planning and expertise is paramount. You only want to do this once, and do it perfectly. Th ere is a technical answer to this that is complicated. Basi-cally, a beautiful smile should lack noticeable imperfec-tions. Th e teeth should have a certain bilateral symmetry and the color should be healthy and go well with the complexion of the person’s skin. Th e gums should be healthy and the lips should be uniform and compliment the outline of the teeth. All of this would make for a beautiful smile. My greatest sense of accomplishment is after treatment is completed, that fi rst look in the mirror by the patient. Th at look of disbelief quickly transforms into a newly found confi dence. KAILEE: What makes a successful hair stylist?

Jelaca: I think having passion in the industry. I think you can actually be successful in any industry if you have passion.

KAILEE:: Would you say your career helped discover your pas-sion or your passion helped you discover your career?

JELACA: I would say my passion helped me discover my career.

KAILEE: How is that?

JELACA: I love interpersonal communication; I love a one-on-one [interaction]. I feel well with a client in the chair, and I love how I make her feel good. I love the beauty industry and to make someone feel great. One of the great things about my life is that every hour on the hour I make someone feel great and look great and I feel like that’s honestly one of the best feelings about my life.

KAILEE: I saw that you worked with a few celebrities as well like Jennifer Lopez and Naomi Campbell-

JELACA: I’ve worked with a variety of celebrities, both A- list and local. I’ve worked with Milla Jovovich, Cameron Diaz, Ivana Trump, Kelly Preston, Oliver Stone, there’s a lot [laughs]. My most recent was Sharon Stone

KAILEE: What celebrities have you not worked with yet that you are dying to work with?

JELACA: I would say I’m interested in the girls now that are very relevant. I would love to work with Ariana Grande, I feel like she would be really relevant for me.

KAILEE: Do you have any special projects you are working on?

JELACA: In 2016 I’m coming out with a new product hair care line, Danny Jelaca luxury hair care. It’s a luxury hair care line with all di� erent essentials. It caters to the “jetsetter”. � ey are hair products that will hold in a variety of climates, they are

designed to handle static, dryness, humidity. I really wanted to create something to cater to all climates and all textures and to repair and restore hair whether wet or dry.

KAILEE: What have you learned about the industry along the way that has made you grow the most?

JELACA: Obviously being around professionals who have passion in the industry has made me grow. I mean I’m a specialist, I believe in departmentalizing, my sa-lon is departmentalized. I have a team of specialists. I have a specialist who just does balayage, I have some-one who just does treatments, someone who just does highlights, someone that just does cutting, someone who just does extensions, etc. I truly believe in special-

izing. I feel like being around people who had a similar passion to me de� nitely made me grow. It’s my great pleasure now to say that I’ve worked with some really great professionals in the industry like Luis Gignac, Jo-hanna Stella, and Horst Rechelbacher. Doing fashion shows,

KAILEE: What really helped push your passion? � e salon, runway work, red carpet work- what was the engine that pushed you to be apart of all these things?

JELACA: Well I’ve had my salon for 3 years, I’m 46 years old and opened up my salon when I was 43 and I’ve worked in the industry for almost 23 years before opening the salon. And this whole time working, I would always thinking about how things should be done di� erent. I would see things and think, ‘Oh, I would do that di� erently’ and, ‘I would treat that client di� erent-

ly’. I just had that drive, that passion to have things done a certain way and gravitated towards other professionals who were similar. I’m very proud of my salon, I feel like next in line is that I’ve given everyone one of my clients everything that I’ve always wanted to give. It’s a true re-� ection of who I am as a person. I’ve changed all of my insights around the salons I’ve worked for. It got to a point where I really wanted to open a salon of my own and bring other professionals up with me

KAILEE: What have you not done yet that you really want to do during your career?

JELACA: I’ve had a really full career already. I’ve done all the major fashion shows, major runway shows, red carpet, I’ve done � lm festivals, Sundance � lm festivals,

� e Oscars, � e Emmys. I think I do really well with more red carpet. I’m a true, real stylist. I’ve done a lot of editorials and covers of magazines but I can really see myself contributing a lot to red carpet and do a lot more of it. I feel like its sort of where I belong. I’d like to have my business, run my salon, and having my line of product be my next step forward and passion. I think that my line of product will help give my passion to other stylists as well.

KAILEE: So you would like to see yourself as in� u-ence for other stylists as well?

JELACA: Oh, yes I would love to teach.

KAILEE: If you were to give somebody advice on how to help in� uence their personal style as a hair stylist, makeup artist, or anyone else in the fashion

industry what advice would you give?

JELACA: I would say stay passionate towards your best skill. Like if you are a cutter, an up-do-ist, I would say be a specialist towards your best skill. Identify who you are, know who you are. If you are good at editorial, be an editorial specialist. If you are good at salon, be a salon specialist. Get to know yourself. Be specialized. I think people want a specialist. If someone wants a treatment they are going to go for someone who can do ‘the best treatment’, if someone wants a cut they are going to want someone who does ‘the best hair-cut.’ People who work in magazines want to hire ‘the best fashion artist’. So I would say for someone in the industry to identify who you are, know who you are and run with it.

KAILEE: What is the di� erence between a hairdresser and hair stylist?

JELACA: I cut and style hair. I don’t’ do treatments, color, etc. Although I appreciate all of those - I shape the hair. I love all the eras, the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and integrate them into current periods. I love to create a shape, a silhouette.

KAILEE: Is there any other � nal things you would say that really helped you or represents your success today?

JELACA: Wow that’s a good question [laughs]. I mean this is all I’ve ever done. I’ve done this for 26 years. I would choose a great city like Miami, New York or Chi-cago where people will appreciate you. Be someone who loves the industry and loves their clients. And surround yourself with all the beauty that inspires you.

IN JUST TWO YEARS, SHEILA ROSENBLUM HAS BECOME A FORCE IN THE MALE-DOMINATED HORSE RACING WORLD. The Manhattan mother of two owns over twenty racehorses stabled at Belmont Park, where she leads two all-female syndicates with top trainer Linda Rice. She also shares ownership of two horses with racing world doyenne Vivien Malloy, also a close friend and mentor. Rosenblum’s horses recently had four major wins; and her star, La Verdad, who ran second at this year’s Breeders’ Cup, has won over $1.6 million to date. “It’s rare for anyone to have such a great streak,” Rosenblum says, “especially someone who’s relatively new on the scene like me!”

What is your secret to success?Hard work, perseverance, and good old-fashioned luck!

How do you balance running a business and personal life?My kids and family come first, then my four-legged family comes second. It’s not exactly easy sometimes, but because I’m passionate about both, they tend to dovetail pretty smoothly. It’s certainly hard work. First and foremost, I’m a mom to Erik and Kara and then I run Lady Sheila Stable. I set aside a certain amount of hours a day for the business and even though I’m self-employed, my ballet years gave me the ability to stay focused and get things done. They also primed me to be a little bit of an over-achiever and I move fairly quickly.

What advice would you give other young women considering starting a business?It’s ideal if you’re fortunate enough to work in some-thing that truly speaks to you, your passions and your strengths. I’ve found that it’s crucial for someone to do their utmost in utilizing obstacles to their advantage. To me, I try to eliminate the concept of setback and find a way to work with it, around it, or through it. I realized early on that challenges can very easily Oftentimes, people get sidetracked with starting new projects mid-stride, but it’s best if you stay focused and complete the ones you’ve begun. Be am-bitious, of course, but be reasonable. And most importantly: don’t give up — ever.

What is your favorite thing about your business?Well, the horses! [laughs] Honestly, I adore everything about them and I have such a wonderful time with them. Everything from watching them run, play around— I guess “horse around” is appropriate, right? My love for the horses really is the

starting point and everything else falls into place, mi-raculously enough. It truly thrills me, which is why it allows me the opportunity to build the syndicate and have the girls join me and do fun, miraculous things together with these magnificent, beautiful animals. As a result, some great new friendships have resulted, and old friendships have strengthened with some great shared memories.What makes a woman powerful?Confidence! That will always lead to success. It’s as sim-ple as that.

What makes a million dollar smile? Hmmm…. that’s a good question. Well, I keep think-ing of people who have beautiful “million dollar” smiles. And though some are bought and paid for [laughs], others are truly a lovely sight. And the more I think of it, the more I realize that all of those people have a real zest for life and a tremendous sense of humor. They ex-press themselves in beautiful ways, often poking fun of themselves and never taking themselves seriously. That’s really how to live life to the fullest. Be willing to make mistakes, and once you do, own it, correct it if you can, and don’t make the same mistake twice. Remember:

none of this is easy. Success is elusive.

Can you describe your Fashion style?My style is definitely something I’d call eclectic classic — does that makes sense? Downplayed elegance with fabulous accessories, really. I’m a dress girl. I love see-ing women in dresses and love it when they show some leg in a nice heel, but then I love jeans and shirt and blazer…with some great boots. So…the classics, but I like to mix it up with a twist of modern and eclectic. That really defines my personality too, I think.
