Excerpts from the interview:
To Ok Taec-yeon: I have followed you since your idol days and have loved everything that you do – you almost gave me chills when you played the antagonist on a TV show. Then you went on to do a historical drama – what’s the most challenging role for you so far and why?
Ok Taec-yeon: I’d say that this character, Sun Woo-Hyeol, holds the most special place in my heart. I think it’s because his personality is most similar to my actual personality, and the fact that he’s an old soul is also something that’s very relatable. I find a lot of commonalities between my character and myself. And because I was able to melt into this character everything I’ve learned throughout my acting career, that’s why Woo-Hyeol holds a special place in my heart. And HeartBeat is not a character-driven story but one with a simple storyline of one man in search of love. I think that also makes it a lot more relatable.

To Won Ji-an: This is a breakout role for you – you’ve been on D.P. and other shows as well, but this is probably the first time we have got to see you in all honesty as an actress. What was your experience like working with Ok Taec-yeon on the show and how would you describe your chemistry?
Ji-an: I also had high hopes because I was starting a series that was very light hearted and bright toned, and from the beginning I was able to get that bright energy. I also tried to bring a lot of different ideas to the set, and the overall ambience of our crew and set allows for that to happen. So I had a lot of fun throughout the process. And as for working with TY, he’s someone who’s so energetic – even after a long day of shooting, you’re bound to get exhausted, but he still manages to be so energetic, so I received a lot of that positive energy from him. All in all, I’m having a lot of fun on the series.

To Park Kang-hyun and Yoon So-hui: Is there a memorable day on set because it involves a lot of VFX and other things as well?
Kang-hyun: For me, actually my scenes didn’t require a lot of VFX because I’m human, but one thing I do remember is there was a scene where I had to hold Ji-An, and on that day the set was so hot. I’m not even the sweating type, and still remember having sweat all through my clothes. I think I was only able to carry her because it was Ji-An and not anyone else.
So-hui: My character also didn’t have many scenes that required VFX, but KH’s story reminds me – towards the beginning of our show, I play the role of Hae-sun, and Woo-Hyeol has to carry me. Originally, if all preparations had been in place, I had to be on a separate wire, making it a lot easier for TY because he wouldn’t have to physically carry me, but it somehow turned out that the preparations weren’t there and he had to carry me while doing the wire action. I thought that if it wasn’t for Taec-yeon, no one else would be able to do this! I was very grateful that he’s always prepared and was in awe of his physical ability.
‘Heartbeat’ will release two episodes every Monday and Tuesday.
