There’s so much to explore in Greece’s ancient and energetic capital, from centuries-old architecture to glitzy rooftop bars. The best way to experience it is by fully embracing life like the locals. Start your day with a cup of Greek coffee and some sweet, fluffy loukoumades, then wander through the whitewashed alleys and pink bougainvilleas of Anafiotika. Browse the independent boutiques in upscale Kolonaki, or head to the Museum of Cycladic Art to see relics discovered across the islands.

Athens flight FAQs

A flight from London to Athens International Airport takes approximately three hours and 40 minutes.

Athens is a popular destination in the summer months between June and August. You could save by visiting in late spring instead, when the weather is sunny and you’ll be able to avoid the crowds. Have a look at our low fare finder to find out more.

There are lots of ways to make your trip to Athens fit your budget. It’s a very walkable city, so there’s no need to take a taxi to get to most places. When it comes to food, there are plenty of family-run restaurants dotted throughout the neighbourhoods where you can sample authentic Greek food at reasonable prices. There’s also a huge array of affordable street food to try here, from gyros to souvlakis.

It’s easy to get from Athens International Airport to the city centre by taxi, metro or bus. You can get there by taxi or metro in around 40 minutes, while the bus will usually take around an hour. Once you’re ready to explore, seeing the city is easy with the metro, tram, city bus and taxi networks. The metro connects you to various postcodes across the city, while the tram network connects the centre of Athens to the coastal suburbs. You can get around quickly via the city bus too, which runs through Athens’ centre to just outside the city.

This city is home to some of the most famous ancient ruins in the world, as well as a plethora of traditional tavernas, hip co*cktail bars and late-night cafes. It’s also a great base for heading into the nearby Cyclades and island-hopping around islands like Mykonos, Kimolos and Folegandros. While you’re here, wander the narrow, cobbled alleyways of Plaka, explore Varvakios Agora, Monastiraki’s bustling marketplace, or retreat from the buzz of the city into the tranquil National Gardens. You could even take a dip in the turquoise Saronic Gulf at one of Athens’ tiny coves just past Vouliagmeni Lake.
